Floors for a Baltic Household That Keeps Getting Busier

Most epoxy flooring calls from Baltic come from households with a lot going on. The town grew 14.4% between the 2010 and 2020 censuses, and four in ten households have children under 18. That usually means a garage doing double duty as a mudroom, a bike barn and a place to park. A coated slab gives that space a surface you can sweep, hose and squeegee instead of a gray floor that holds every spill.

Two kinds of slabs in one small town

Baltic was platted in 1881 under the name St. Olaf and took its current name in 1889. Homes near the older part of town can have garage floors that have been patched, painted or sealed more than once. Houses built during the recent growth tend to have smooth, hard-troweled slabs that look fine but are too slick for a coating to grab. Both get diamond ground before anything goes down. The older slab needs it to remove failed paint and expose sound concrete. The newer one needs it to open the surface so the base coat can bond.

What fits a family garage here

  • Epoxy flake floors: color chips hide sand, mud and salt film between cleanings, and the texture helps when kids come in with wet shoes
  • Polyaspartic floor coating: a topcoat that cures fast, so the garage is back in use sooner
  • Garage floor coating as a full system, with crack filling at control joints where tires cross
  • Basement floor epoxy for play areas, laundry rooms and storage under the main floor

Near the river

Baltic sits on the Big Sioux River in northern Minnehaha County. We do not assume any basement is wet or dry because of where it sits. We test it. A moisture reading at the estimate tells us whether a standard epoxy primer will work or whether the slab needs a moisture-tolerant primer first. If water is actively coming through a wall or crack, we say so and leave the coating for after that is fixed.

Acreages around town

The whole city is counted as rural by the Census, and plenty of properties around it have a detached garage or a pole shed with a concrete floor. Those slabs see tractors, mowers, trailers and the occasional oil change. Our commercial and shop floor epoxy is a thicker build meant for that kind of use, and we can add extra grit to the topcoat in areas that get wet.

How we schedule in Baltic

We measure the floor, test it and give you a written quote. On install day we grind, vacuum, repair and coat. A two-stall garage is usually a one- or two-day job depending on the system. We give you plain timing on when people can walk on it and when the vehicles can come back. Call (605) 299-0051 or

Baltic Questions

Will flakes hide the mud my kids track into the garage?

They hide a lot of it. A medium or full flake broadcast in a blended color masks dust and dried mud between cleanings. The floor still needs a sweep and a rinse now and then, but it will not show every footprint the way a solid gray coat does.

Can you coat the floor in my pole shed outside Baltic?

Usually, yes, if the shed has a concrete slab in sound shape. We grind it, fill cracks and lay down a thicker shop system. Gravel or dirt floors cannot be coated, and a slab with large heaved sections needs concrete work first.

Our house is newer. Does the slab still need grinding?

Yes. New garage slabs are often troweled very smooth, and a coating will not bond well to that surface. Grinding gives the base coat a profile to hold onto. It is the same step we use on old floors, for a different reason.
