When Polyaspartic Makes Sense in Sioux Falls

Polyaspartic floor coating is a type of polyurea. It cures much faster than standard epoxy, holds its color in sunlight, and can be applied across a wider temperature range. In Sioux Falls those traits matter. A garage floor can go down on a cool fall day, you can walk on it the same day, and the floor near an open south-facing door will not turn yellow.

How it compares with epoxy

  • Cure time: Bob Vila's guide puts foot traffic at about 3 to 4 hours and vehicles at about 24 hours. Standard epoxy needs at least 12 hours for walking and about three days for vehicles.
  • Temperature range: HomeGuide lists polyaspartic at roughly -30°F to 140°F for application, compared with a narrow range for epoxy. Product data sheets still set the limits for any given material.
  • UV resistance: HomeGuide rates polyaspartic excellent and epoxy poor to fair. Epoxy can yellow or chalk where sunlight hits it.
  • Lifespan: HomeGuide lists 10 to 20 or more years for polyaspartic, the same upper range as solid epoxy.

Why we often pair it with epoxy

Many of our systems use an epoxy or polyaspartic base with a polyaspartic topcoat. The base builds thickness and grabs the ground concrete. The topcoat adds UV stability and abrasion resistance where tires turn and boots scuff. On a garage with a lot of sun through the door, or a floor that needs to be back in use quickly, an all-polyaspartic system may be the better fit.

Working in a South Dakota fall and winter

Sioux Falls has a January daily average of 17.9°F. That limits when standard epoxy can go down in an unheated garage. Polyaspartic gives us more room, though the slab still has to be dry and above the product's minimum. We check slab temperature and dew point the day of the job. If conditions are wrong, we move the date.

Where polyaspartic is not the right choice

Bob Vila notes that polyaspartic cannot be installed over concrete that already has high moisture. Fast cure also means a short working time, so it needs a crew that has the floor laid out and the mixing timed. On a damp basement slab we may start with a moisture-tolerant epoxy primer and finish with a polyaspartic topcoat, or recommend a different system.

Finishes available

Polyaspartic systems can be clear, solid color, full flake or partial flake, with anti-slip aggregate in the topcoat. Gloss and satin sheens are both possible depending on the product.

Care

Sweep grit, rinse salt off during winter, and wash with a mild cleaner. The UV-stable topcoat holds up well near open doors and windows, but heavy metal tools dropped on the floor can still chip it.

What This Covers

Polyaspartic can be the whole system or the topcoat over an epoxy base.

Full polyaspartic systems

Polyaspartic topcoats

A UV-stable, abrasion-resistant clear coat over an epoxy base.

Cold-season installs

Work in cooler garages within the product's temperature limits.

Flake or solid finishes

Full or partial broadcast, or a solid color with anti-slip texture.

How It Works

1. Check the slab

Moisture, temperature, cracks and old coatings are checked at the estimate and again on install day.

2. Grind and repair

The slab is diamond ground and every crack and spall is filled.

3. Apply in sections

Polyaspartic sets fast, so the crew mixes and rolls in planned sections.

4. Return to use

Foot traffic in hours and vehicles in about a day, depending on the product and temperature.

Polyaspartic Floor Coating Questions

Is polyaspartic better than epoxy for a garage?

It cures faster, resists UV better and can go down in a wider range of temperatures. Epoxy builds thickness at a lower cost and is more tolerant of a long working time. Many floors use both: an epoxy base and a polyaspartic topcoat.

Can polyaspartic go down in winter in Sioux Falls?

Often yes, within the product's limits. HomeGuide lists a range of about -30°F to 140°F, but the data sheet for the specific product rules, and the slab has to be dry and above the dew point.

How long does polyaspartic last?

HomeGuide lists 10 to 20 or more years, depending on traffic, prep and care. Prep is the biggest factor.

Why is polyaspartic more expensive?

The material costs more, and the short working time takes a practiced crew. HomeGuide puts it at $5 to $12 per square foot compared with $4 to $10 for epoxy.
